Plenty of interesting results and news from last night, so let’s get right to it:
- With Kalin Lucas struggling, junior Chris Allen stepped up for Michigan State. Allen scored 16 points to lead the Spartans to a 54-47 victory over Wisconsin.
- Ohio State rolled to a victory over Indiana in Evan Turner’s first game back from injury, but the All-American was still frustrated – but not by his back. He told Jeff Goodman of FOXSports.com that his foul trouble really limited him.
- Louisville took 20 of its first 29 shots on Wednesday from behind the three-point line. Apparently it worked – the Cardinals jumped out to a 14-0 lead and beat Providence by 22.
- Sure, Kansas beat Cornell by “only” five points, but Tom Keegan of the Lawrence Journal-World writes that people shouldn’t be worried by the Jayhawks’ narrow victory.
- After an excellent first half, Scoop Jardine played just one minute in the second half against Memphis in Syracuse’s 74-57 win. Jim Boeheim said he wanted to get freshman Brandon Triche back on track, so he sat Jardine.
- Tennessee was without four players on Wednesday, but the Volunteers beat Charlotte, 88-71. Mike Strange of the Knoxville News-Sentinel writes that the homecourt fans had a lot to do with the win.
- West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins inserted Darryl Bryant back into the starting lineup against Rutgers, and it worked. The Mountaineers won 86-52 and Bryant had 15 points and only one turnover.
- Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said before the Bearcats’ game last night against Cal State Bakersfield that he wanted Cashmere Wright to play more. Last night, Wright played 23 minutes, scoring six points in an 87-58 victory.
- Marquette finally broke through in a close game, beating Georgetown last night, 62-59. "I think the same lesson we had against West Virginia and Villanova we had tonight, and we're thankful for the result," said Marquette coach Buzz Williams.
- In a game matching a provisional Division-I team and a squad from the Pac-10, a 51-point margin might not surprise you. However, what if I told you that the Pac-10 team lost? Yup, Oregon State fell to Seattle on Wednesday – at home – 99-48.
- If someone can figure out the Pac-10, let me know. I’m completely befuddled, especially after Wednesday night. Undefeated USC lost to last-place Stanford, and contender California lost at home to rebuilding UCLA.
- Against California, UCLA moved Malcolm Lee to the point guard spot and started freshman Tyler Honeycutt – it clearly worked, as the Bruins pulled off the upset win.
- BYU got plenty of publicity for Jimmer Fredette's 49-point performance, but it was balanced scoring that helped the Cougars get a 77-73 win over UNLV on Wednesday.
- J.P. Giglio and Ken Tysiac of the Raleigh News & Observer look ahead to the ACC season on Tobacco Road.
- Duke prepped for its contest against Georgia Tech this weekend with a road win at Iowa State on Wednesday, behind Jon Scheyer's 31 points in his homecoming.
