Mercer, Legion Transferring; Banks Arrested

According to The Red and Black, Georgia junior guard Mike Mercer has announced he is transferring to South Florida, where he will be eligible after the first semester next season. "It came down to three schools, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and South Florida, and I wanted to go somewhere where I could step in and play immediately," Mercer told UGA's student newspaper. The announcement came two weeks after Mercer was dismissed from the Bulldogs for being a "disruption." He averaged 12.2 points per game during his career in Athens.

Kentucky freshman guard Alex Legion is planning to leave the program and transfer, the Wildcats announced last night. “It’s unfortunate and not what I wanted to hear, but I understand,” Gillispie said in a press release. “We met with Alex and his mother Friday, and she informed us of her desire to seek a release for her son. Shortly after that meeting, Alex told me that he still wanted to be a part of our program. He played in the game against North Carolina Saturday and seemed happy when I spoke with him Sunday." Oak Hill Academy coach Sam Smith spoke with Legion after the transfer. “He just feels like it’s not the right situation,” Smith told the Lexington Herald-Leader. “I didn’t push it with him.” Legion averaged 6.7 points per game this year, but his minutes had been decreasing lately. Jeff Goodman of FOXSports.com speculates Legion might transfer to Michigan, where he originally signed a letter of intent to play.

As first reported by The Jonesboro Sun, Arkansas State star guard Adrian Banks has been suspended indefinitely from the team after he was arrested Sunday for firing a gun within Jonesboro city limits. Banks, a 6-3 senior who was averaging 21.7 points per game this season, was arrested at 2:35 AM after police officers heard several shots in the area. Once police officers found a gun in the car Banks -- and four other ASU athletes -- were in, he told police he had indeed fired the gun. "A fight was breaking out at the club, I found the gun on the ground and didn’t want anyone to get shot, so I shot the gun until it was empty," Banks said, according to a police report. Jonesboro police officer Adam Williams said he believes Banks wasn't shooting at anyone. Note: The link on The Sun website is no longer active.
