April 4th News and Notes: Smith goes pro, Coaching changes

News

- According to the
Associated Press, Colorado State junior center Jason Smith has announced that he will enter the NBA Draft. However, he is not expected to hire an agent, leaving the option of returning to the Rams open. Smith said, “I owe it to myself and my family to assess what my possibilities are related to the draft.” New coach Lorenzo Miles backed the decision, saying “I support Jason and his family, and will do so in every way that I can.” Smith averaged 16.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season, and is considered a late first-round pick.

- Creighton coach Dana Altman
leaves for Arkansas, and then changes his mind.

- Michigan
finds a replacement for the fired Tommy Amaker in West Virginia coach John Beilein.

- Todd Lickliter turned his success at Butler into the
head coaching job at Iowa, replacing Steve Alford.

- Colorado
has filled its coaching vacancy left by Ricardo Patton, who resigned before the season, with Air Force coach Jeff Bzdelik.

- South Florida
hires former Arkansas coach Stan Heath, who is confident they will win.

- Don’t worry Southern Illinois fans. Coach
Chris Lowery isn’t going anywhere—for awhile.

Notes

- SI.com’s Luke Winn gives his early Top Ten for the 2007-2008 season. North Carolina is #1 and Florida isn’t even in the Top 30.

- Robyn Norwood of the Los Angeles Times ranks the
Top Ten NCAA Tournament moments from this season.

- David Steele of the Baltimore Sun discusses how
more than one legacy was established in Monday’s championship game.
